Millions of People are Watching the Watchmen, and Playing the Watchmen Too

Watchmen was one of the highest grossing films of 2009, and it was a film that fans of graphic novels had been waiting decades for. The Watchmen film is an adaptation of a series of graphic novels done in the mid 80’s. The comic and the film are set in an alternate reality in the 1980s. The alternate reality is similar to the real world in many ways except that in the alternate world superheroes not only exist, they live among everyday citizens. In the world of Watchmen superheroes were created in the 1940s and in the 1960s in order to help the US win WWII and the Vietnam War. For awhile superheroes were essentially freelance operators working for hire, until a law was passed that required all superheroes to either retire, or work for the government. At the time of the Watchmen film there is a general bad feeling among the public about superheroes and they are not considered role models.

The Watchmen are a particular group of superheroes who are brought together in order to fight the threat of nuclear attack against the American people. The loose group consists of Rorschach, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, Nite Owl II, the Comedian, and Doctor Manhattan. Unlike the traditional superhero of graphic novels the Watchmen really don’t want to help out. They have more human qualities than any other graphic novel superheroes have had in the past. They drink, they curse, they are very, very flawed individuals. Often fans refer to them as “superheroes with issues.”But in the end they band together in the name of friendship and justice to save the world the way that all superheroes do.

The Watchmen movie almost didn’t get made. Originally Watchmen was optioned back in the 1980s but at the time film adaptations of graphic novels were not nearly as popular as they are today and the film rights were passed from one studio to another while the story went from one director to another. Terry Gilliam, one of the famed members of Monty Python, at one point was attached to the movie but dropped it after he declared that it would be impossible to bring Watchmen to the screen. It was impossible in the 80s, but in 2009 a Watchmen movie was released. The dark, edgy, action film found a ready audience among fans of graphic novels, Sci Fi, and action films. The movie was filmed in a style similar to the hit adaptation of Sin City starring Clive Owen and the gritty, graphic imagery resonated with the audience. Watchmen didn’t have a mainstream audience in the 1980s but modern audiences embraced the cynical superheroes.Watchmen

Watchmen costumes are expected to be a big hit this year.

At the same time the Watchmen movie was released a Watchmen video game was also released for PC, XBox 360 and Playstation. Game players are allowed to play as the mysterious Rorschach or as the enigmatic Nite Owl II. The Watchmen video game got mixed reviews from gaming experts, but fans of the game and fans of the movie and original graphic novel thought that while the game wasn’t as good as it could have been the lush graphics made it worth playing.

Disney costumes are always popular for Halloween.  Young children and adults equally love to dress up like Disney characters at Halloween. It isn’t hard to figure out why. Disney characters are archetypes of characters that speak to everyone. Little kids love to play make believe and use their imaginations and the fairy tale like characters from Disney movies inspire kids to dream.  Adults love Disney characters because they are reminded of happy childhood memories like singing along with The Jungle Book movies or waiting for Mary Poppins to show up and take them into a chalk drawing on the sidewalk for an adventure.  Disney characters have changed over the years to appeal to modern audiences but fairy tale appeal of Disney’s heroes and heroines has never died down.

Some of the most popular Disney Halloween Costumes are:

Snow White – Snow White costumes and Wicked Stepmother costumes, along with costumes of the Seven Dwarves, are always in high demand at Halloween.  Snow White has a very unique look among Disney characters.  Her jet black hair can be created with a wig or with temporary Halloween hair dye.  If you don’t have blue eyes you can copy hers with colored contacts. A Snow White Halloween costume will provide the iconic blue and yellow dress that Snow White wears in the Disney movie.  The sweeping Wicked Stepmother costume is regal and intimidating and instantly recognizable.

The Little Mermaid – Ariel, the mermaid who wanted to be human in order to be with her prince, is a classic Halloween costume.  Little girls and grown up girls alike identify with this mermaid princess who is willing to sacrifice everything for love.  Mermaid costumes are also a lot of fun to wear, which is part of the reason why Ariel is seen all over on Halloween.

Tinkerbell – The little fairy from Peter Pan is almost more popular than the boy hero in that story.  From toddlers to tweens little girls love to dress like fairies, and Tinkerbell is one of the most memorable fairies of all. Wings, pixie dust, and other ethereal accessories can finish off a Tinkerbell costume in style.

Prince Charming
– Prince Charming appears in many incarnations throughout Disney stories but he is always dashing, always romantic, and always swoops in to save the day.  Men like dressing as Prince Charming, but little boys may prefer to dress like the pirates from Peter Pan or the Lost Boys instead. Men who don’t think they fit into the Prince Charming mold might also like wearing a Captain Jack Sparrow costume from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Jasmine – The lovely Eastern princess from the Aladdin story is beloved by millions of girls.  Jasmine’s harem pants and top, along with some sparkly makeup, are a fun costume for an active little girl.  Adult women also love dressing up in Jasmine costumes because of the exotic clothes.

There is a Disney character costume to suit everyone’s personality.  Old or young, everyone has at one point or another dreamt of being the hero or heroine of a Disney fairy tale. Halloween is the perfect chance to create your own fairy tale with a Disney costume.

The first Halloween film made its way into the cinema in 1978. With it, it brought tension, horror and lots of screams upon seeing Michael Myers ( Tony Moran) brutally killing the inhabitants of the quite town of Illinois. Michael, a demented psychopath molded in evil, had been locked away in a sanitarium for 15 years after killing his sister Judith Myers( Sandy Johnson). As his doctor, Sam Loomis( Donald Pleasence) and nurse Marion Chambers ( Nancy Stephens) frantically try to catch up with him, Michael goes about slashing his victims without mercy nor reason. One thing that directors somehow overlooked is Michael’s miraculous ability to drive. After being locked away at the age of six with no real contact with the real world, how did he suddenly know how to drive at the age of twenty one after stealing a car?

Michael  was back at it again by his terrifying and equally gripping acts In Halloween II, in 1981. This time he came back for Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). The setting and atmosphere that the movie was shot made it a pacemaker for the other horror movies that tried to imitate it. With the right sounds, lights and each climax being timed appropriately while Michael was on his rampage, Halloween II did not loose its horrific grip since it was first launched in 1987. Michael’s doctor continued to be played by  Donald Pleasence and his nurse by  Nancy Stephens. The entire team made Halloween II a real shrilling sensation that so far has not been outmatched by any other horror film. Hunted by Sheriff Leigh Brackett( Charles Cyphers) and his doctor,Michael seem to always be a step ahead in his killing , leaving the two bewildered about his next strike.

With the success from the last two version of Halloween, Michael was resurrected  to act in a series of Halloween films that managed to maintain the original gore and horror. With such splendid performance from Michael who was later played by different actors, whether in: Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers(1988), Halloween: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Halloween H20:20 Years Later and Halloween: Resurrection,  the viewer will agree that the mastermind behind the development of each Halloween film is a real genius.

To ideally introduce the next Halloween Film the producers found unimaginable ways to keep alive the mission and character of Michael. Michael who was cursed by the Curse of  Thorn, a curse which obligates the individual to kill his whole family in order to safeguard mankind, was made an unstoppable maniac in all Halloween films. The explanation behind the curse is a bit weak, as with the rampage that Michael had committed in earlier versions,  there wont be one soul left for saving, even after wiping out his entire family.

With all the possible reasons to justify Michael’s survival outstretched, one has to wonder,  what will be the unthinkable explanation that the directors will find to somehow resurrect Michael for another killing spree?

Halloween costumes of Michael Myers will be popular year after year.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was on July 17, 2009. It is directed by David Yates with appearance from actress Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. This, like many other scenes from Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliff) is a true representation of how frivolous the human imagination can become. Time has passed since the first release of Harry Potter and the characters have matured in a sense, but the story line is nothing more than a script pumped with words to get a show on the road.

It will be  Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts and much expectation and excitement is in the year. As the teenagers have grown over the years, the script makes an  attempt to accompany  such development with crushes here and there. Romance can be felt in the air with Harry falling for Ginny Weasley, but she already has a relationship with Harry’s classmate,  Dean Thomas.  Harry, however, is not the only one that cupid has managed to shoot with an arrow- Ron will be dating Lavemder Brown, a fun loving girl.

With private lessons from Professor Dumbledore and the mysterious Potions book that Harry found, which  originally belonged to the Half-Blood Prince, Harry will embark on yet another ‘ magical adventure’ to improve his magic and uncover the dirty secrets of Voldemort’s past. All of this is done with the intention to find the smallest of detail that could eventually compromise this villain and defeat him in the process.

As most villains honor themselves with someone to do the dirty work,  Harry will experience great frustration from Draco Malfoy’s antics as he goes about to do the will of Voldemort. From a small hush in the horizon to  a blatant appearance, Verdemont will slowly rise in power offering much resistance to the young magician and his group of friends.

Most of Harry Potter’s scenes take place in a classroom. After quite a bit of releases it is time to get out of the classroom and face the big world. It will be more enthusiastic to watch Harry’s Graduation Day or even Harry In The Big World, than a see the same script being pulverized and molded into the same material, only rephrased with a little special effects here and there.

For an adult, Harry Potter does not offer much action to keep one pinned to his seat and begging to see more. It is more of a scratch on the surface of movie making that has somehow managed to get enough viewers in its magic hat. The only people that will benefit from seeing yet another dull script from Harry Potter are children that are enthused about the world of magic. The scenes will be yet another sorry cry of originality that leaves one exclamation in the air, O.K. so what’s the big deal!

There comes a time to just throw in the towel and call it a day. The first moment that Harry Potter lived when it was first released, was one of magic and awe, but if the directors rinse this script anymore, then it is bound to come out with a bit of holes!
